James S. and Carol W. Gallagher Endowment Fund for the Advancement of Choral Music at The Ohio State University.
In 1875 a small singing society emerged on the campus of The
Ohio State University with the intent of promoting school spirit,
spreading good will across the campus, and creating an enjoyable
musical outlet for the singers. It is doubtful that any of those
founding members could have envisioned what would become, and
what would be the OSU Men's Glee Club 131 years later.
Guided by the past, energized by the present, and ever hopeful for
the future, the Men's Glee Club and Glee Club Alumni Association
announce a major undertaking. With the encouragement of Dean
Karen Bell (Dean of the College of Arts), the support of Dr.
Mellasenah Morris (Director of the School of Music), and the
guidance and direction of Christy Rosenthal (Director of
Development for the Colleges of the Arts), we embark on a national
campaign to raise $100,000 as an endowment for the support of
choral music in the School of Music at The Ohio State University.
The Glee Club and its Alumni Association intend to seek annual
donations of $20,000 per year over a span of five years.
Inspired by the theme "bringing dreams to life," this money will be
placed in a Foundation fund that will enable us to pursue such
projects as:
a. Commissioning new works for male chorus.
b. Producing recordings that allow us to share our music with a
national audience.
c. Sponsoring symposiums that focus on recruiting, retaining, and
training male singers.
d. Traveling (locally, regionally, and nationally) as part of the
artistic outreach of the School of Music and as ambassadors of
Ohio State University.
The James S. and Carol W. Gallagher Endowment Fund was created
in honor of Professor Emeritus James Gallagher and his spouse,
Carol. Mr. Gallagher was a member of the music faculty at Ohio
State University for 21 years, and was instrumental in putting the
Men's Glee Club on the national artistic map. Under Mr. Gallagher's
leadership the Glee Club was invited to perform at two national
conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, sang at
numerous divisional and state conventions, and in 1990 won a
prestigious international music competition in Llangollen, Wales.
